Big News in Edmonton

The EFL has purchased 5 BRAND NEW T-3000 tables which are shipping to Edmonton right now. Although we have been trying to get them here for months, the current plan is that we will receive them before Saturday Feb. 26th.

We will now have 6 tables in Gateway which should speed up the tournaments and give everyone a lot more time to play pick up games on Tuesday nights!

We are opening a new North End Location which will also hold weekly DYP’s and contribute to our league points system and standings! The night for these will most likely be Thursday (don’t worry we won’t be canceling Time Out Pub drop in night). We have approached a couple of different locations and will let you know soon!

Tuesday Feb 15th Results and Points Update

We did a super singles tournament on Tuesday, and had 30 people show up for the event. The crazy thing about it was that all 30 had played league before at least once, not one brand new player.

Super Singles means that we divide the league into Tiers, we did it strictly off points, so most of the newer players were in Tier 3, Tier 2 was a division filled with high end players that have spent a lot of time in the league, and Tier 1 was the top 8 players in the league.

To get started we did a few Tier 3 games, including Ray putting on a show with some epic banks, hitting 6 of them in his match to take out #1 seed Garrett. Ray had a good event and ended up finishing a very respectable 4th.

Zak was playing Ray Thompson (different Ray) in his first round match up and it was a battle, in the second game I saw Zak take a 4-4 time out and recollect his thoughts. Sure enough he won it with a long pull and moved into the next round.

Kevin was playing Devin, an tough battle for both guys as they play against each other at work a lot. Devin won the first game and was surely on his way to victory when he was up 4-1 in the second match. Kevin fought back hard though and won the game to tie the match, in the 3rd game Devin wouldn’t let it slip away and won quickly.

Kevin went on a winning streak in the B side and took out Garrett and then Uzair, Zak and Kevin finished the night tied for 5th.

Rob, another guy that works with Devin and Kevin, was on fire throughout the night, he won a few matches with some really good hand speed and reactions, ended up finishing 3rd place.

Darren Jordan was also back in business, and his 2 bar was on fire. He won a bunch of matches by timing his shots well and throwing in really solid fakes. Darren was solid throughout the night but ended up losing to Christof in the final.

Christof clearly proved his skill in the event, and you could see that his extra factor that is tournament experience paying off and hopefully he will be winning tier 2 some time soon! Great playing Christof, the match against Karli was a tough one too and it took some fight to get through that one.

In Tier 2 there was a lot of REALLY close matches. Paul and Chad opened their brackets against each other, and of course it went down to meat ball. Chad was playing great again, as he has been recently, but Paul and Chad have played so many games against each other that it probably comes down to one of those mental battles every time. Paul came out on top.

Sam beat Ricardo (who deserves a big welcome back to the foosball scene) and then beat Des in an intense game too. Sam also though couldn’t fight through Paul’s challenge. Paul plays such a consistent game and makes the right decision so often that it is tough to beat him unless you play PERFECT foosball.

Chris was the #1 seed in the event and even though he had a tough bracket including Cam and Ritchie in his path, he still made it through to the kingseat game against Paul. I just mentioned that it takes playing a perfect game to beat Paul, and Chris really did that – he didn’t stray from using his best passing options and shots from every rod, Chris took kingseat.

In the B Side Chad was back at it from a first round loss, fighting all the way through Ritchie, Des, and then Sam to get back to playing Paul to go to the final. I didn’t see this one but it was probably as close as the first one.. Chad couldn’t get his redemption yet.

Chris won the final and is the tier 2 champion, as well as a top 10 player in Edmonton again!

The Tier 1 event didn’t finish, but again a lot of great matches were played. Simon was clearly on his game, and you can see all the practice that he has put in leading up to the HOFC has been paying off. A lot of the top players in Edmonton have been using video to help there game lately, especially watching Insidefoos video’s. Simon mentioned to me that it was helping him with his decision making and that it reminds him to take his time with the ball.

There were a few good games but when Simon smoked me I wouldn’t say it was a “good game” because it wasn’t really close at any time. I didn’t see the match against Christian but I’m guessing it was more of the same. Garry was also solid, and went through a losers bracket path of Tobin, Ben, Will, Christian – to get to the final.

We didn’t have time to finish the event, but Simon and Garry have to play the final, then the playdowns for 1st and 2nd have to take place.

The 4th place playdown was won by me, I had to beat Ray which was really tough considering the point spot. I got enough of the bounces to stay out of my net to get the win. The 3rd place play down was won by Rob from the Tier 3 event.

Tier 2 and 1 still have to happen so hopefully we can get them done this week.

Next week: Pro/Am Draw your partner, essentially that means that the lowest half of players each draw a partner from the highest half of players.

Tuesday Feb. 8th Results and Points Update

This week we did a Super Draw Your Partner!

Any event that is preceded by the name Super means we divide the league up into two tiers. We had the highest ranked 8 players playing in one DYP, and the lower ranked 10 players playing in the second DYP. Once the two DYP’s finished, we had the 3rd place teams play off for $15, the second place teams play off for $30, and the first place teams (after each team received $10 ) played off for $25.

For the play-offs tonight we used the format of a race to 7, the lower ranked team started at 4 points. It made for some really intense match-ups in the money games.

In the first DYP we had Simon and Chad against Chris and Will to start off the tournament. After losing the first game, Simon and Chad really turned it on. Chad blocked a few consecutive shots and scored some nasty slingshots, Simon took over the game on the 5 row with patience and smart decisions. He really picked apart 5 bars the whole night, and was catching lightning fast lane passes or downhill walls.

Up next for Simon and Chad was a match VS Christian and Darcy. Simon kept up the good work on his 5 and was drilling Darcy pretty good too. Christian didn’t appear to be at his best on the night, but I guess it would be tough to play at that level all the time. It also probably had a lot to do with Simon being so patient and smart on the 5 row that Christian couldn’t get momentum going.

Chris and Will took out Christian and Darcy in the next match, and then came into the final against Simon and Chad. In the first match both forwards were passing well, but Chris had come up with a defense that was working really well. He sort of baited the long and got back to it in time (something that isn’t easy to do against a pull as fast as Simon can shoot). Simon and Chad got up 4-1 in the second game of the match, but with some lucky bounces and strait up willpower Chris and Will fought back into the game. At 4-4 Chris made a huge block and then hit a near wall bank to win. The near wall bank is a really nice option (looks strangely similar to Mikes near wall bank) and because Chris sets it up and shoots it from the same spot as his #1 option push shot it is tough to cover both holes.

In the second match Simon adjusted on his 3 bar and started to take a little bit more time, the first two games were both close and went 1-1 to take it to the final game in the final match. Simon blocked a couple of passes and put the ball away, and then both teams traded goals twice. 4-2 for Simon and Chad, but again this time Will and Chris powered their way back into the game. At 4-4 with Chris playing up he got the ball and took a time out on the 5 for a switch. Simon blocked the pass and got the ball on his 3 bar, Chris made a block on an ill timed middle. Sets up… and POUNDS the near wall bank home to win it.

In the 2nd tier DYP Darrel and Ritchie tore up the tournament, without coming too close to losing any games. Garret and Rob were the big story in this one though, after losing their first game they came back through the losers side beating Ray and Carlie, Devon and Michael, and then Zak and Kevin consecutively in some really tight matches.

In the final Ritchie and Darrel took it to the bank and won the event.

In the money matches we had 3rd places Kevin and Zak playing against Christian and Darcy. With a 4 point spot in a race to 7(win by 2) Kevin got the ball and put the first one away, and then 2nd one away, essentially dooming Darcy and Christian immediately. Somehow this night had not been going Christians way, every time he had the ball he looked a little uncomfortable and wasn’t making the best decisions… until this exact moment(file that under obvious foreshadowing).

In the 2nd place match Simon and Chad were dominant, and scored 7 goals quickly to win the match 7-5 after giving up the spot.

In the 1st place money match, Will and Chris put a couple in, then Ritchie and Darrel turned it on. Darrel made 3-4 great blocks and Ritchie shot well to take the game 7-4.

To finish off, Christian and Darcy came back with 8 consecutive goals to win the game and the money match after being down 6-0!

We also ran a 9:00 DYP which I didn’t see much of, but Chris and Ben Crocket came from the losers bracket to double dip Cam and Devin in the final. What a night for Chris, won both DYP’s that he played in with double dips in the finals – won two 4-4 matches with an insane bank, and moves all the way up to 12th spot on the league standings!

April Fireball Tournament Announced!

The EFL has announced a huge tournament coming up in April at West Edmonton Mall on the incredible new Fireball table.

Tuesday Feb 1st Results and Points Update

This week we did two events. One was an 1800 Limited, where you could partner up with any other player as long as the total points ended up being under 1800.

The other event we did was Singles. Pretty much if you had more than 1000 points you were playing singles, we did 3/5 to get ready for Vegas HOFC and the upcoming Fireball tournament for that one, so the competition was really intense in both events I found.

The turnout was pretty good on Tuesday. Counting the players that showed up just to play pickup games we had 33 players.

In the main event we had 20 players – plus another 6 in Singles.

Patrick Jones and Ray had a tough first round matchup against Ritchie and Dan – Pat and Ray switched a few times but found something that worked and pulled off the first game 5-4. Ritchie turned it on quickly (and shot REALLY well throughout the night) and pulled out the second game. Dan blocked really too, and they pulled off the win.

Chad and Des also lost the first to Brian and Carlos, who have been really hot lately, but still managed to come back and win that one.

Jamie and Carmen were dominating matches, Carmen was using my favorite pass throughout the night and Jamie picked it up a bunch of times. For someone who doesn’t come out all that often Jamie has been really dominant when he does come out. A bunch of consistent passes and a roller that can beat anyone, thats what it takes to win, and Jamie sure has consistency and mental strength to keep fighting.

When Chris and Mike played against Dan and Ritchie, Chris scored 4 consecutive pull side rollers at one time – forcing Ritchie and Dan into a 4-4 time out. Chris was timing the shot perfectly, waiting out baits, and hitting the shot when it was open(barely open). Dan was putting up a tough D, but Chris can put it in the hole really fast so it was even more impressive when he burried another one for the win.

Darrel and Carlie also won the first two matches they played, and sure enough, we had two girls playing against each other to go to the King seat game in a 16 chart. Another first for our foosball scene!

Chris and Mike had been playing great too, after beating Dan and Ritchie they came up against Des and Chad. Chad has a monster 2 bar, I had seen him bury about 5 goals up to this point already. Des and Chad beat Chris and Mike, Jamie and Carmen beat Des and Chad to take kingseat!

Chris and Mike fought back through the losers bracket and double dipped in the final. Sorry I didn’t get to see more of what was probably an incredible match!

In singles Tobin and Ben went to a 5th game in a tough one, Tobin has been really solid lately if you have read my posts you know that… Tobin took it, shooting lights out in the final game – he put up a really strong zone against Ben which got him the possessions he needed.

Garry beat Darcy I think 3-1, then Christian beat Garry.

I played against Tobin and won 3 strait, but almost entirely off slop and 5 bar hacks. I am pretty sure I only got 3 or 4 goals from 3 bar shots in the match.

Christian and I had a really back and forth kingseat match. Christian took the first two, then I fought back with two wins, and got up 3-1 in the 5th. Christian turned it around again and got a couple lucky ones followed by a slingshot from the 2 bar to win it.

Darcy made his way through the B side with matches against Tobin and then Ben, Darcy took the first game off me but I fought back to win it. Christian steam rolled me in the final including a MONSTER 3 Bar Sling shot to win it. Honestly I kind of gave it to him because we had just been talking about it and I thought he would miss, but he didn’t miss it… he crushed it.

Christian wins singles, Chris and Mike win the 1800 Congrats all around!

1st $45 Chris and Mike
2nd $25 Jamie and Carmen
3rd $15 Des and Chad

1st $20 Christian
2nd $10 Will
3rd $0 Darcy

Tuesday Jan 26th Results and Points Update

Last night we did a singles tournament. We had a lot of new players out, I think there was a total of 7 first time tournament players. It was really exciting to see a bunch of new faces and they all seemed excited about playing foosball. It was great to see them learn what the `tournament scene`is all about, but also show the stuff they had – and some of it was pretty good.

In No Pro singles Dan beat Uzair in the final, it seemed to be a hard fought match, I was playing in a game on another table when it happened but I think it went to a second match.

In Open Singles there was a few really good games too. I saw Uzair battle with Carey and take it to a third game, 5-3.

Paul also went really deep into the event, finishing only behind, Myself, Christian, Garry, and Ben.

Garry ripped me apart from his 3 bar in the first match I had against him, and he did what he called improvising on his 5 bar. I think I started to pick up on something with the wall and lane combo he normally uses so he just starting slapping the ball through off time and in different holes than normal… it worked.

I ended up making it back through the losers bracket from there and playing Christian in the final. I have beat Christian in doubles a few times, but I don`t think I had ever won in a tournament in singles before. Needless to say I threw out hollow threats via text message for days previous to this, so he was probably worried coming into the match. I ended up beating Christain 4 strait games to take the win!

I also have been talking to people, and it seems that the validity of the points has been lacking because of the fact that a lot of people in the points system had only played one or two tournaments, or hadn`t come out in the last month or two.

I limited the points on this list to only the people that have played at least 3 events, and have showed up within the last couple months of events. I also put 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc next to players names, so you can see from the people on the list where you rank.

Tuesday Jan 12 DYP Results and Point Update

Last night we did a DYP with 16 players. It was nice to see some new faces out and overall the event went really well.

One thing that is certain, when Shane is on like he was last night it is incredible to watch. Sam and I had a blast watching the final together, and with the vast array of what most people would call trick shots just work together to find holes in any defense.

You can’t mention Shane without mentioning Tobin, as they won the DYP together… Tobin turned into a brick wall in the last few games and made a crucial pass 2-3 in the final game. Shane and Tobin came through the losers bracket but double dipped Garry and Roger to take the title and the cash.

Garry and Roger were the favorite to win from the time the draw was finished. In the kingseat game they played against myself and Dallyn. Dallyn played great in the game, and entire tourney, but even with his multiple blocks and great clearing I just couldn’t get enough possesions to win the game. Garry had a great defensive 5 and Roger wouldn’t let anything come out of his zone off the back wall. Great playing by both guys and they deserved the win in that game.

Also worth mentioning is Jasmine and Dallyn winning the No-Pro game, it was nice to see them win some cash and you can see they have been playing a bunch of foos lately. I love seeing the look on players faces the first time Jasmine hits a roller at them.

Results:
1st: 40 Tobin and Shane
2nd: 25 Garry and Roger
3rd: 15 Will and Dallyn

No Pro: 20 Dallyn and Jasmine

Edmonton Tuesday Results and Points Update

This week we did a ProAm Draw – it went really smoothly because we didn’t have many teams compared to normal probably because of the Christmas season. All in all 12 participants – but still enough to have a few really competetive teams.

The final of the tournament this week had a funny story line to it as Chad pointed out before it started. Shane and Paul against Roger and Chad. Its funny because Shane and Roger foos together all the time, and so do Chad and Paul.

In the end, Roger and Chad came out on top – congratulations and good work. I know that Chad has really been coming a long way lately, we played together a bunch of times over Christmas and he took about half the best of 3’s we played.

1st $40 Chad and Roger

Great event last night, 16 players and it was really fun. A shout out to Jordan and Daniel, two guys who had never played “tournament foos” before but definately have some game. Its great when new guys come out and already have good ball control and shooting etc.

We did a Pro/Am draw, most teams had a pro with the exception of Chad/Darcy – but you guys did well considering the challenge you were up against.
